California MENTOR honored by Harbor Regional Center

06/19/2014

California MENTOR was honored by Harbor Regional Center at its 40th Anniversary celebration, held June 3 at the Long Beach Museum of Art. Harbor Executive Director Patricia Del Monico presented California MENTOR with one of two Provider Awards, citing a long-standing history of the two organizations working together and finding new ways to serve and promote development for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Harbor Regional Center—located in Torrance—is one of 21 centers in the state that operate under contract with the California Department of Developmental Services to provide community-based services to citizens with developmental disabilities and their families through partnerships with local private-sector organizations.

“California MENTOR has been extremely accessible, open and responsive,” Del Monico said. “When we have identified a need and we know that existing service designs will not suffice, they never hesitate to say ‘yes, we can.’”

In addition to being recognized for its overall delivery of individualized, community-based services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, California MENTOR was highlighted as a partner for the College to Career program (C2C). Offered by Harbor Regional Center through a partnership with California MENTOR,Long Beach City College, and HOPE Inc., C2C offers students with intellectual and developmental disabilities the support they need to succeed in school and participate in college life. The program was launched in 2012 and provides the opportunity to live in an off-campus apartment, choose from over 100 courses of study, and receive academic coaching and other supports that help them succeed in the classroom.

California MENTOR brings its proven Supported Living Services model to the C2C program, creating Individualized Service Plans (ISPs) and delivering personalized supports to help students become more independent in off-campus apartments and in the community.

“We are very pleased to be recognized by Harbor Regional Center for our partnership as a service provider,” said Dana Delman, executive director with California MENTOR. “Our skilled and talented staff members in the Long Beach area make it possible and allow us to provide innovative and client-focused services each and every day. I couldn’t be more proud of our team.”
